No environmental permit leads to jail sentence for skip hire firm

Two men who ran a skip hire operation without an environmental permit have been sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for a year.

Both men pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to running a skip hire business trading as McGowan’s Skip Hire at Gravenhurst Road, Silsoe, Bedfordshire. Mark Christopher Blench, aged 42, of Holybush Road, Luton, and Kevin Peter McWilliams, aged 32, of Cornel Close were given suspended sentences. Blench was also fined £3,000 plus £5,000 costs while McWilliams  was also ordered to carry out 180 hours unpaid work.

Prosecutors for the Environment Agency told Luton Crown Court that Blench brought back large quantities of waste and sorted it at the site, but he was only authorised to transport waste. McWilliams moved waste on the site and sorted and disposed of waste by burning. Neither man had the required environmental permit.
