Househunter's 30ft fall down well lands estate agent with £200,000 fine

An estate agent has been fined £200,000 after a woman fell 30ft down a well while viewing a house.

The 39-year-old had to try to stay afloat in the water for an hour before she was rescued by firefighters.

The victim and her husband were at an open house viewing in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, when a board covering the well gave way as she walked around the garden.

She was thrown a hosepipe and wrapped it around her waist to avoid sinking.

The woman was left with head injuries, concussion and had post-traumatic stress disorder, an investigation found.

The HSE said the estate agent had been told that the board covering the well did not look safe, but did not properly investigate the risks.

As well as the £200,000 fine, the company, Strakers (Holdings) Ltd, of Devizes, Wiltshire, must pay costs of £2,474 after it pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations over the incident in April last year.
